Troubleshooting Common Issues in WordPress
WordPress is one of the most commonly used blogging applications. While it's extremely popular, there are some common issues that can arise — and most of them you can fix in a matter of minutes. If you're experiencing trouble with a slow site or pages that aren't loading correctly, read the tips below for help.
Here are some common problems and our recommendations.
My WordPress site is slow
Cause: If you are not using Web Hosting or WordPress Hosting, you might experience slowing of your site. Not using a caching plugin might also cause slowing issues.
Solution: Use WP Super Cache or another third-party caching plugin, or move to WordPress Hosting.
My blog keeps coming up as a blank page
Cause: Corrupted themes can cause blank pages to load, particularly if you migrated your blog from another hosting provider.
Solution: Change your theme back to the default, and then reinstall the theme you want to use.
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Click Appearance. A default theme is listed.
- Click Activate under the default theme. The Appearance page reloads.
- Click Activate on the theme you want to use, or choose a new theme.
- When you have the theme you want, return to the Appearance page, select the theme you want, and then click Activate.
My site's still running slowly. What else could it be?
Cause: Plugins, including Twitter or Facebook plugins, can slow your site.
Solution: Disable all of your plugins and enable them individually to determine which plugin causes the slowing.
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Click Plugins.
- Select all and click Deactivate.
- Return to your WordPress Dashboard. Wait a minute, and then check your site to see how it runs. Now you'll need to activate your plugins individually.
- Click Plugins.
- Select a single plugin to enable. Click Activate.
- Return to your WordPress site and see whether the slowing returned.
- Repeat this process until you determine which plugin or plugins are causing your WordPress site to run slowly.
